| The Charlotte County Concert Band, under the direction of DeVere Fader, has planned a delightful two-part concert honoring all of our US presidents along with St. Valentine's Day lovers. Please join us for their show, Sweethearts and Presidents, on Sunday, February 20th at 2:00 pm in the Cultural Center of Charlotte County Theater.
The first part of the concert honors the memory of our past presidents with patriotic music written by Aaron Copland, Henry Fillmore, Lee Greenwood, and Irving Berlin. Our resident composer, Malinda Zenor, has also written a new selection which will be given its premier performance during this show. Dick Weber will be our announcer. He will narrate a very fervent composition by James Curnow titled "Heritage of Freedom", written to honor the four presidents who appear upon the mountainside at Mt. Rushmore National Monument. The second part will deal with love affairs and the problems associated with "LOVE." North Port's wonderful vocalist, Kim Campos, will be our guest soloist. She will sing selections by Jerome Kern, and George and Ira Gershwin. Other composers of note are Leroy Anderson, Richard Rodgers, Stephen Sondheim, and P.I. Tchaikowsky.
Along with this show, the concert band will also be performing on March 20, and April 17 during the coming season. All shows are on Sundays at 2:00 pm in the Cultural Center of Charlotte County Theater. Tickets to each show are $7.00 (Cultural Center Members) or $8.00 (non-members) and can be purchased at the Cultural Center Box Office. We are located at 2280 Aaron Street, and can be reached by telephone at (941) 625-4175 x221. We are open from 9am to 4pm Monday through Friday, as well as from 10am to 2pm on Saturdays. Bruce Shelly has done it all... from cruise ships to Atlantic City to the Van Wezel Center for the Performing Arts and the Asolo Theater in Sarasota. Bruce Shelly redefines the style of such people as Engelbert and Elvis by adding his own millennial dimension. He delivers the nostalgia of the past with a passion for the future just by being himself and singing from his heart and soul. Bruce's show, A Night To Remember, will include all of your favorites! Bruce will be doing what he does best and enjoys most, Engelbert Humperdink classics, in front of a live audience, creating an evening of memories. Shelly last performed at the Cultural Center in 2003 to a sold out crowd.
To open the show we are pleased to present "Just Friends," featuring Lyn Purmort and Bob Constantino. They are talented, versatile musicians that specialize in The Great American Songbook of Pop and Jazz Standards but are in no way limited to that genre. Both classically trained music majors, they are proficient in all areas including jazz, pop, disco, country, rock, oldies, and classical music. They will be bringing us the music of Tony Bennett, Patsy Cline and more as they get you ready to experience A Night To Remember.
