Kristoffer "Kris" Kristofferson (born June 22, 1936) is an American writer, singer-songwriter, actor, and musician. He is known for hits such as "Me and Bobby McGee", "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down", and "Help Me Make It Through the Night". The Songwriters Hall of Fame inducted Kristofferson in 1985, as did the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1977. 1999 saw the release of The Austin Sessions, an album on which Kristofferson reworked some of his favorite songs with the help of befriended artists such as Mark Knopfler, Steve Earle and Jackson Browne. In 2003 Broken Freedom Song was released, a live album recorded in San Francisco. In 2004 he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 2006, he received the Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and released his first album full of new material in 11 years; This Old Road. On April 21, 2007, Kristofferson won CMT's Johnny Cash Visionary Award. Rosanne Cash, Cash's daughter, presented the honor during the April 16 awards show in Nashville. Previous recipients include Cash, Hank Williams Jr., Loretta Lynn, Reba McEntire and the Dixie Chicks. "John was my hero before he was my friend, and anything with his name on it is really an honor in my eyes," Kristofferson said during a phone interview. "I was thinking back to when I first met him, and if I ever thought that I'd be getting an award with his name on it, it would have carried me through a lot of hard times. For more information: www.kriskristofferson.com John Prine (born October 10, 1946, in Maywood, Illinois) is an American country/folk singer-songwriter. He has been active as a recording artist and live performer since the early 1970s. In 1971 Prine's self-titled debut album was released. He and friend Steve Goodman had each been active in the Chicago folk scene before being "discovered" by Kris Kristofferson (Kristofferson remarked that Prine wrote songs so good that "we'll have to break his thumbs"). The album included his signature songs "Illegal Smile," "Sam Stone," and the folk and country standards "Angel from Montgomery" and "Paradise." The album also included "Hello In There", a song about aging that was later covered by numerous artists and "Far From Me," a lonely waltz about lost love for a waitress that Prine later said was his favorite of all his songs. The album received many positive reviews, and some hailed Prine as "the next Dylan." Bob Dylan himself appeared unannounced at one of Prine's first New York City club appearances, anonymously backing him on harmonica.

Hispanic Outreach   •   Time: 6:00 PM

Where:8:00 PM Cultural Center of Charlotte County • Port Charlotte
During the past year, The Cultural Center of Charlotte County, with support of a grant from Wachovia Bank, initiated its Hispanic Outreach Project. The decision was made by the Center Hispanic Outreach Advisory Committee to focus on educational offerings that would address the special needs of the Hispanic community. Three were identified: English language, financial information, and American culture. For the English offering the committee decided to provide the well recognized Rosetta Stone computer program. The course has proved very popular. It allows students with little or no knowledge of English to proceed through the program at their own speed. A bilingual instructor and volunteers are available in the classroom to help students through the program and to engage them in conversation. The computer is also used in the second course offered through the Hispanic Outreach Project, the Money Smart course provided by Wachovia Bank. This course is offered on-line in both English and Spanish. A bilingual instructor, with banking background, is on hand to assist students. The 10-module program introduces students to the basic services provided by banks and information about credit, loans and mortgages. Both the Rosetta Stone English and the Money Smart courses are ongoing. The third course offered through the Hispanic Outreach Project will begin on Monday, May 11. Introduction to American Culture is a six-hour course that is taught in Spanish. The course is designed to help recent immigrants understand how the history and of the United States determines the values and characteristics of this country. All the courses offered through the Hispanic Outreach Project of the Cultural Center are evening classes, and all are provided without charge to the students thanks to the grant from Wachovia Bank. Spanish speaking individuals interested in the classes should call Luis Carrion, the Hispanic Outreach Coordinator for the Cultural Center at (941) 421-4750. Individuals who are not Spanish speaking but wish to register for either the Rosetta Stone program or the Money Smart program should call Rebecca Jordan at the Learning Place: (941) 625-4175 ext 219.
